(The Fiji surf scene is seen to be a young sport taken up by many locals in Fiji. However history states that surfing in Fiji was practiced as early as the 1800’s. Through documentation by early sailors traveling through the Hawaiian Islands witnessed surfing in Fiji in the areas of Vuna, Taveuni and Koro.  They commented that the Fijian surfers were very graceful and mostly practiced by Fijian women.  The sport was known back then as “Vakavodo Ua” which translates to ride waves.
